Bollywood's most popular dance tracks were featured in the Diwali special episode. The Bollywood Diwali 2010 release Golmaal 3 was promoted in a concert on Saregamapa last month and the movie is a great success. The comedy received positive critical reviews as well.
Kamal Khan's Jhoom Barabar Jhoom
Kamal Khan's energetic rendition fetched him the Performer of the Day award.
Jhoom Barabar from the movie of the same name is another example of how a film's music can succeed when the film itself failed. It has outlived its parent movie and continues to be a regular feature in Bollywood dance concerts.
Apparently the original record was embroiled in controversy. According to judges, Daler Mehndi once recorded a superlative rendition, although it is credited to Sukhwinder Singh. On this episode Daler Mehndi was requested to perform live on the song, and he obliged.
Jhoom Barabar Jhoom boasts of two of the most popular songs in this millenium. In addition to the title track, it has a beautiful romantic duet in Bol na halke halke sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Mahalaxmi Iyer.
Nach Baliye and Kajrare
The 2005 blockbuster Bunty and Bubli features two other runaway successes. Nach Baliye was picturized on the lead pair of Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukherji, while Alisha Chinoi's kajrare took the nation by storm with an item dance by Aishwarya Rai.
Both were performed with gusto by female contestants Sniti and Sugandha Mishra.
Abhilasha Chillum chipped in with Bappi Lahiri's Dance Dance Dance, but ended up in the bottom three this week, for the first time.
Ranjeet Rajwada performed a Rajasthani folk number. While his performances to date can be described as inconsistent, sometimes brilliant and sometimes off, his song selection has remained impeccable. Barring one or two exceptions, he has stayed away from mainstream Bollywood. Both Ranjeet and Zee must be congratulated for highlighting quality music instead of commercial hits.
Bishakh Jyoti received the highest votes in the week due to two sterling performances Bulla ki jana main kaun and Chitthi na koi sandesh in the October 30 and 31 episodes.
Bishakh Jyoti, Kamal Khan and Sniti Mishra were the top 3 vote-getters, while Abhilasha Chillum, Ali Sher and Khurram Iqbal ended up in the bottom.
A preview of the November 6 episode has Sniti Mishra's version of the evergreen Lata classic, Aap ki Nazron ne samjha pyaar ke kaabil mujhe from the 1962 movie Anpadh. This episode will be a piano round.
