Koi Koi Sushi is a small joint hidden inside a West Broad Street strip mall. The decor is simple, with neat wooden chairs and tables for seating, and the service prompt and friendly. There is limited seating outside the cafe style joint on the sidewalks. The one issue is parking - there are a few parallel parking spaces designated outside the restaurant, and few spaces in a nearby parking garage and on the adjoining streets.
Appetizers and Tempura
The restaurant offers different kinds of of appetizers. We tried the albacore salad ($7) with small slices of fresh fish arranged on a bed of greens. An alternative is the seared tuna dish ($8).
One can also try a variety of tempura - shrimp, calamari and the shrimp/calamari/vegetable tempura combo (range $7-$9). The shrimp tempura ($7.99) had 5 pieces of jumbo shrimp deep fried in tempura batter. The tempura combo features an assortment - 3 shrimp, multiple calamari and a small variety of vegetables (crisp broccoli, yams and mushrooms). It is in itself a complete dish for $8.99. All of the above come with a tempura sauce dip. For those with more fiery tastes, a rich red sauce is available and served on request.
Sushi and Sashimi
For the entree there is a wide range of sushi (or baked fish, or tempura) to choose from, starting from $8.95, with approximately 8-10 large sized sushi rolls per plate.
Other Japanes staples - miso soup, sake wine selection are part of the menu. Regular sodas and juices are also found on the list of drinks.
Patrons with more limited tastes and budgets can order sushi by the piece. There is a limited value priced sushi menu (starting from $4) that consists of 6 rolled sushi pieces. Although choice is limited to certain vegetables and fish, it works well for those who are more interested in salads and tempura. The sushi crab combo for $5 is very satisfying. If you are there during lunch hour on weekdays you can avail of the lunch platters like the sushi sashimi combo.
In summaryKoi Koi Sushi is recommended for its excellent cuisine, courteous service and competitive prices (a typical meal with appetizers, sushi and drinks ranges between $30-40 although some wines may raise the bills). Diners can count on cleanliness, neatness and freshness of ingredients from the open kitchen. The restaurant operates from late morning to night on weekdays and Saturdays, and dinner hours on Sundays. It is highly regarded as one of the best sushi joints in the Falls Church community.
